Phonics and Reading

Pupils across KS1 are set into small groups enabling a personalised teaching approach meeting the needs of each learner. Teachers and Teaching Assistants deliver broad range of phonic teaching from learning the very first sounds, to preparing the Year 1 children for their National Phonics Check, and then introducing GPS (Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling). Pupils move into KS2 as confident readers and with good phonic knowledge.

We use ‘Twinkl phonics’ scheme and pupils learn to read using the Twinkl phonics books and Oxford Reading Tree initially before moving onto a wider range of books. As our results at KS1 and KS2 demonstrate we are determined to foster a love of reading in our pupils.

We have identified 100 books per class as our Eastcombe Reading Spine.  These are books to use as whole class reads, recommendations for reading corners and book shelves or for children to take and read at home. We are working with the ESA to ensure we have all 100 books identified on each class list on the bookshelf. Each class has a display of their 100 books, with children challenged to read as many as possible.
